Hotel Angeleno, L.A., February 2007

It’s impossible to miss Hotel Angeleno as you drive up LA’s interstate 405. A striking, circular structure towering over its neighbours in the Brentwood district, the Angeleno is a contemporary yet cosy renovation of an iconic building.

“Where Sunset Boulevard meets the 405 freeway!” reads the chirpy website of this relatively modest-sized, 209-room hotel. Although located at a “crossroads” between LA’s Westside districts, we like this hotel for its relaxed, friendly atmosphere. It’s also an easy drive into Santa Monica and Hollywood, or to Westwood and Beverly Hills.

The decor is contemporary modernist, and every room comes with a balcony to soak up those sprawling LA views. There’s a business centre (Mac and PC), gym and cute lobby cafe. Each room is comfortable and convenient, with complimentary high-speed internet access, a desk area, flat-screen TV, CD player and modern bathroom. But more importantly, the beds are soft enough to lure any jet lag-sufferer to sleep.

Breakfast is served in the West Restaurant on the 17th floor, a popular dining destination for Italian food with great night-time views. WGSN also liked the heated pool with the glam, outdoor lounge area and fireplace – very LA.

Although the noise from the freeway can be a low background hum, the Angeleno is an understated but warm hotel that also offers good value for money.
