W Los Angeles Westwood

WGSN.com, February 2007

You can’t beat W hotels when it comes to sheer glamour, a sense of escape and larger-than-life design- and the Westwood certainly doesn’t let the side down. With an excellent location bang in-between Rodeo Drive and the UCLA campus, just off interstate 405, it’s an easy walk to nearby shops, theatres and museums.

There are six suite categories in this 258-suite hotel, ranging from the humorously named Wonderful Suite to the movie-star status Extreme Wow Suite. All are spacious and kitted out with Bliss toiletries, CD/DVD players, large TVs and fluffy signature W down beds as standard. Facing friendly competition from the soon-to-open W Hollywood, many of the Westwood’s rooms are due for renovation, so expect suites to match the ultra-sophisticated lounging and dining areas.

Rande Gerber’s Whiskey Blue at the Westwood can be a buzzing destination for drinks and, come summer, the outdoor tables and secretly seductive lounging areas are a favourite with Angelenos. The Ninethirty restaurant is also popular, serving up local foods, cheese and, of course, Californian wines.

The lush poolside area is a strong selling point for this hotel, with its bold row of stripy cabanas, but a stay here can also be a low-key affair. Head to the 7,000sq ft Bliss spa, with is movie-while-you-manicure stations and signature brownie buffet, for deluxe pampering LA style.

Perhaps this hotel can be summed up by the warm welcome it gives to guests’ pets (beds on request, complete with turndown gift), and its work-hard-play-hard approach to business, with meeting room set-ups including “inspirational” games such as tic-tac-toe (noughts and crosses) – ideal for making a long seminar pass a little quicker – and even aromatherapy scents.
